Not what Jesus meant when He said He is sending you a Helper…

We often hear the ‘job descriptions’ of the Holy Spirit in a special sermon on power. Holy Spirit doesn’t have a ‘job description’ when it comes to relating with you. He is not some blue collar worker doing a 9 to 5, 40 hour week for the Godhead, with overtime on Sundays. He is the Father’s Spirit and He is also the Spirit of Christ. What He does in you and through you is not His job, it is merely Him being Himself and revealing Himself to you and those around you.

That being said, here is a list of 10 things He most definitely does not do. If you have more, add them to the comments section below.

1. Convict you of your sin.

John 16:8-9 says He convicts the world of sin and that sin is specifically unbelief. Since you believe in Jesus, there is no need to convict you of not believing in Jesus. Also, you are not from the world (John 15:19) but born from God and thus an overcomer of the world (1 John 5:4).

2. Keep records of your wrong.

God swore by Himself to never remember your sins again. That means He doesn’t record them for a Blue Ray HD viewing in front of Grandma when you arrive beyond the pearly gates.

3. Make decisions for you.

Sure you can ask for His advice, I’m 100% convinced the advice will be good. Who will I marry? What job should I do? Where should I live? He really cares about those answers, but He is not going to make the choice for you. Your decisions are your decisions. Ask Him, trust Him.

4. Come and go.

He is with you always (Matt 28:20) and also said He will never leave nor forsake you (Heb 13:5). You entered into relationship with a person. You have received of all His fullness (John 1:16), and He fully dwells in you (Rom 8:11) because in Christ dwells the fullness of God (Col 2:9).

5. Increase your anointing.

You have the ultimate anointing of Christ (1 John 2:27). What do you want increased? Is Christ’s anointing deficient?

6. Throw your hand on a sick person.

Praying for the sick is our privilege. It is how God loves. Holy Spirit wants to love on everybody you come into contact with, but you control who you love and to what degree. He might tell you about a need a person has (1 Cor 12:8-10), but the choice to share and love is still yours.

7. Tell you how much to tithe.

Holy Spirit is not interested in getting you to tithe, He is actually interested in getting you out from under the law. You have to decide in your own heart how much you want to give before you start giving grudgingly (2 Cor 9:7). If you are going to ask the Him, don’t be surprised if you always hear, ‘All of it.’ (Acts 2:45)

8. Write the 10 Commandments on your heart.

His ministry is one of life, not death (2 Cor 3:6-9). If He writes the 10 Commandments on your heart, He might as well sign your death certificate.

9. Show you all the fruit you’re not growing.

He is the one growing the fruit. It is His fruit, not yours (Gal 5:22-23). He can grow it much better than you, and He wants to grow it through you and with you as you rest in the finished work of Christ.

10.  Teach you lessons through pain, suffering and sickness.

He teaches us to say no to ungodliness (Tit 2:11-12) and corrects us with His word (2 Tim 3:16) and His anointing (1 John 2:27). He does not teach with sickness. If you really believe He is teaching you through sickness, is it the best idea to skip class by going to the doctor?

Next time I will give you some insight into what He actually does like to do!

Grace and Peace!
