I know this sounds like a trick question, but it isn’t. This statement is 100% true. But attaching this statement to a warped theology doesn’t make the theology true. Take Job for example. People look at what he went through, attach the same yesterday, today and forever and then come to the conclusion that God can do or allow the same things to happen to them. He can make us sick, cause suffering and severely oppress us. I puke on that mindset!
Many of you might be thinking, “But Cornel, God is the same yesterday, today and forever, it makes logical sense!” Not really. See, I am also the same yesterday, today and forever. I was Cornel yesterday, I am Cornel today and I will be Cornel tomorrow. I am the same person. But everyday I act in different ways. The statement is regarding Jesus, the person, not His actions. If God’s actions were the same yesterday, today and forever, He would only ever have created light. The moment He created a firmament of water on the second day His actions changed and therefore His actions are not the same yesterday, today or forever. Think about how God has related to different groups of people over the course of history. How He relates to people is determined by the covenant He has with them. We have no idea what covenant Job had with God. To compare his relationship with God to ours is like comparing known to unknown. You just can’t logically do it. That would be the same as comparing my marriage to a relationship I have with a female friend and say, ‘See, Cornel knows Rensia and has sex with her. This must mean he has sex with every woman he knows.’ Can you see how comparing yourself with Job does not work? You don’t have the same covenant relationship with God that he had.
Everything in the Bible was written for you, not everything in the Bible was written to you. Yes there were times when God destroyed cities, nations and individuals, or at least allowed it to happen, but all that changed when Jesus died on the cross. When He did that, ALL things became new. That means everything changed. Did God change? No. He is the same yesterday, today and forever, but how He relates to mankind changed. It changed so much He even went to hell to preach the gospel to those who died in the days of His wrath without knowing Jesus. (If you didn’t know this, go read 1 Peter 3:18-20)
When Elijah called down fire he was seen as the great man of God. When James and John wanted to do it Jesus said they were of the wrong spirit. God has changed the way He relates to you. You have a covenant of peace, kindness, mercy and grace which means God relates to you based on love, kindness, mercy, peace and grace. He doesn’t cause or allow sickness and suffering, that would be in violation of this covenant. Sickness is not an expression of love. Suffering is not an expression of kindness. Oppression is not an expression of mercy. They are all an expression of death. God does not show love by allowing sickness, He showed love by taking every sickness upon Himself for you. So the next time somebody accuses God of making somebody sick or allowing them to suffer, you can stand up and say, “Get behind me satan! My Father is a good Father who knows how to give good gifts to His children! You and your sickness be gone now!”

Grace to you all!
