In a previous post I wrote about Pharisaical faith. Click here to read more about what that is. This post is about getting rid of pharisaical faith.

I don’t have a particular formula or a magic prayer for your to say. Ridding yourself of pharisaical faith means to renew your mind so that you can completely stop relating to God through the law covenant and whole heartedly get to know Him through grace.

Mind renewal doesn’t happen without revelation, and as such I can not force you to see or understand a revelation I have received. I can only retell what I have learned and trust the same lightbulb will go on over your head. Work out your own salvation.

Philemon 1:6 that the sharing of your faith may become effective by the acknowledgment of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus. (NKJV)

Your faith is made effective (Greek: effectual, powerful and active) by acknowledging (Greek: Precise and correct knowledge) of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus. The first revelation needed then is what exactly the good things are which you have in Christ.

Eph 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ (NKJV)

There is absolutely nothing you lack in Christ. No mantles, no anointing, no spiritual gifts, no blessings, no power, no ability, no authority, no nothing. You HAVE BEEN blessed with EVERY spiritual blessing in Christ. Whatever you deny or believe you lack in Christ will be ineffective in your life. Whatever you acknowledge to have in Christ will be effective in your life.

1 John 4:17 Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world. (NKJV)

As Christ Jesus is right now, at this very moment, seated at the right hand of God in perfect holy intra-trinitarian fellowship, so ARE you right now at this very moment too. The same righteousness, the same sanctification, the same inheritance, the same favour, the same blessedness, the same love, the same holiness, the same Father!

Rom 8:16-17 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs–heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. (NKJV)

Listen right now as the Holy Spirit confirms and bears witness with your spirit to what I am saying to you: “You are the son of God Almighty, the Father of lights. Your are an equally precious and favoured son, just like Jesus. Everything Jesus attained and inherited through the cross is equally made yours too. His righteousness is attributed to you freely. His justification, His sanctification, His Grace, His everything is now equally yours. Welcome to the family!”

Pharisaical faith demands your performance in order to achieve. It makes you work for something you already have. If you understand what I have said in the above few paragraphs, hopefully your realize that is pretty dumb to try to earn something that is already yours. You don’t earn an inheritance, you just receive it.

Grace and Peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of Christ our King!

A short while ago I wrote a post explaining why I believe Christians need not worry about fulfilling the law since Jesus fulfilled it already. I ended that post by saying I was not just referring to the law of Moses, but to the entire tree of knowledge of good and evil. This post is just a continuation of that thought.

What does it mean to partake of the tree of knowledge of good and evil?

It simply means to eat its fruit. When you eat something, you are drawing your sustenance from whatever you are eating. If you are being sustained by the knowledge of good and evil, then you are under law. The law in essence is the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. When you eat of it, it reproduces accordingly.

What is the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil?

I believe the fruit of the tree is the law. The word knowledge means discernment and understanding. That is what the law is; it is a collection of regulations that gives us an understanding and discernment regarding what is good and what is evil. So if you eat the fruit called law, it in turn produces a fruit in you. The fruit of the law is death.

Gen 2:17 “but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” (NKJV)

Rom 7:5 For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the law were at work in our members to bear fruit to death. (NKJV)

Rom 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. (NKJV)

1 Cor 15:56 The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. (NKJV)

2 Cor 3:6-7 who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. 7 But if the ministry of death, written and engraved on stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of the glory of his countenance, which glory was passing away, (NKJV)

Now the questions beckons, ‘Is this only applicable to the law of Moses?‘ I believe no. This is universally applicable. The law of Moses was merely the understanding and discernment of good and evil as applicable to a specific nation in a specific time and context. The knowledge of good and evil stretches way beyond the scope of the Mosaic Law. There are things people do today that we would consider wrong or unlawful that has no mention in the Mosaic law. You could probably find some vague reference, but we live in a different time and context as the Israelites and therefor our governments impose different discernments regarding good end evil. Our traffic laws are a prime example.

The law of Moses says nothing about J-walking, running a red light, parking illegally or midnight drag races. But in our time and context, it is considered wrong. In Singapore, it is illegal to chew gum! It is relatively easy to understand and discern between good and evil, but just because you can discern and understand it, does not mean you are actually partaking of the tree. My next question is of far greater value than merely knowing what the fruit is.

How does one eat the fruit of tree of knowledge of good and evil?

I don’t believe many people have asked themselves this question honestly. The answer will deal a death blow to the ‘grace is a license to sin’ view some people hold. As most people (I hope) would say about themselves, I believe myself to be a law abiding citizen. Now how can I say I am both a law abiding citizen and not under law at the same time? Easy. I can be law abiding, and yet still not be partaking of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. You only partake of the fruit of the tree of knowledge when you start relating to God through the law. When you believe your right-standing before God is based on separating yourself from evil by only doing good, then you are partaking of the fruit of the tree of knowledge. God has called us to relate to him by faith, not works. Works is anything you do thinking it will improve your right-standing in the sight of God. Only faith in Christ produces true right-standing.

I don’t go out and do whatever I want because I was actually born with a brain. Breaking laws have consequences. It just so happens that many of the laws enforced by the country you live in were also found in the Mosaic law, it doesn’t mean the Mosaic law is in force. So if you go out on a pseudo-grace inspired murderous rampage because you believe you can do whatever you want under grace, you won’t be breaking the 10 Commandments, but you sure will be breaking your country’s law. And when you are caught and stand before a judge, he will laugh at you if you defend your actions by saying ‘I am not under law but under grace.’ You will be sent to a special kind of prison with padded walls if you’re lucky.

So even though I am not under law, I am a law abiding citizen because I understand love. When you act in love towards all people, you will by default not break any laws (Gal 5:13-14 and Gal 5:22-23). So my prayer for you is that you will come to understand that being law abiding and partaking of the tree of knowledge are 2 different things all together.

I hope I was clear enough in how I conveyed this. If not, please comment below and ask questions.

Yours in Grace,

Cornel
