I have been asked a couple of times how does one go about dealing with curses. This is going to be a very short overview. For the theology on the illegitimacy of ANY and EVERY curse, please read: Generational Curses: Fact or Fiction?

The first problem people have when it comes to dealing with curses is that they get stuck on the illegitimacy. They take the theology on board that says “My generation goes back one to Jesus and He has no generational curse.” That is completely true. Jesus was made a curse for you. (Gal 3:13). But some people then play the very dumb ‘ignore-the-schemes-of-the-devil-game’. They basically reason, “If it’s illegal, he can’t do anything so all this talk about curses is not applicable to me.” You have to think your theology through all the way. Jesus provided freedom from curses just like He provided salvation, healing, and deliverance. Just because He provided freedom from oppression, doesn’t mean all the captives have been released. Jesus provided healing yet the devil still attacks us with sickness. If all sickness is illegal yet you can still get sick, guess what? You can also be under the effect of an illegal curse. Stealing is illegal yet thieves do it everyday. No right doesn’t equate to no ability. Jesus provided a way out. You have to take it to get out.

When Jesus became a curse for you, curses did not cease to exist. Just like when He bore the stripes for your healing, sickness didn’t cease to exist either. Now that you hopefully understand that curses, though illegal in every way, can still effect you, let me tell you how to deal with them. I hope by now you also know that you don’t rebuke a devil by saying “Devil I rebuke you!” In the same way you don’t bless somebody by saying, “I bless you.” Look at how Jesus rebuked the devil:

Mar 1:25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!”

The rebuke is an instruction, a command that needs to be obeyed. Speak to the mountain. What about a blessing?

Gen 1:28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

God blessed man by speaking out a command that demanded increase and multiplication. So if you want to speak a blessing over somebody’s finances, don’t say “I bless your finances”, say “Finances increase and multiply in Jesus Name.” To bless is to speak well of, to command increase. The same applies to breaking curses. You never once read about Jesus saying, “I break the curse of such-&-such over you.” So how does one do it then? By blessing.

Speak and command the opposite increase and multiplication to the effect of the curse. Bless those who curse you. The answer for curse is in blessing. If your finances are cursed, start blessing it by commanding increase. If your womb is barren, (barrenness is a curse) start speaking life, increase and fruitfulness over your womb. Command it to come alive and to bear children. Speak the opposite increase. Speak the desired outcome. Reverse the curse by speaking and commanding the opposite blessing.

If certain sicknesses seem to run in the family, don’t wait until it comes to your door. Start blessing and speaking life over your body. If you don’t have the symptoms yet, go fight the same sickness in other people’s lives and get victory so that when the devil does try to bring it on you, you can fight him and beat him because your faith for victory over that sickness has been established. David beat the lion and bear and gained experience way before he took on Goliath.

Go read through Deut 28′s list of curses and make a list of those that seem to be in effect in your life. Then start commanding the opposite blessing because you have the legal right to bless for you have been freed. Don’t fight for victory, fight from victory. Jesus won, you are just reminding the devil of that fact. Bless yourself, your family, your children. Life and death are in the power of your tongue.

Eph 4:29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

Your words impart grace. Speak grace-filled blessings and see curses reversed. If you want to know more about this subject let me know and I will write a few more articles on it.

Be fruitful and multiply and Jesus Name!

Hey Cornel, this really helps! Thanks for the article.

I have experimented with Romans 12:21 in my church and now in the Children’s Home by not focusing on the wrong things people are doing but by getting them doing good. I have watched as the “wrong” has fallen away when I have led them in doing good. For example: I had a lady in my church who came from a Hispanic Catholic background(very superstitious) and was reading Terot cards. She came to me concerned that she was bringing a curse on herself for practicing this. She was having a hard time because God was dealing with her to get rid of them but people continued to come to her and offer her money, which she was in desperate need of, to read their cards.

I started by telling her that people were coming to her because of the calling God had on her life and she was tapping into the wrong source as she was ministering to them. I simply told her to go ahead and follow God’s leading to get rid of them, not to worry about it, and start seeking God for the answers to the questions people were coming to her for.

The freedom I saw in her was amazing! It was as though I had lifted a huge burden from her back and she was able to step into the evangelist calling and gifting she had. She contributed to more people coming to our church than any other person we had. “…overcome evil by doing good.”

I had never thought about it when dealing with curses. Awesome, thanks again!

The link to generational curses is not opening

  • Cornel says:

Whoops! Thanks for that! Fixed it. Try it again!

  • Jeanet says:

Thanks Cornel, this has been very helpfull.
Please do more on this subject of speaking blessing. Have been so used to speak indirect blessings like “I bless your recovery”…

  • Paul says:

This is really helpful Cornel. I love the way you get us to think our theology all the way through. Jesus provided a way out, but you still have to take it – just like salvation. Simple, profound, liberating! Thanks!

  • Kim says:

So glad I came across this website but could you please give me an example of how to command the opposite blessing of Rheumatoid Arthritis. Just want to make sure I understand and thanks in advice..

  • Cornel says:

    Hi Kim,

You can be very general or even very specific. Command what you don’t want, to leave and what you do want, to happen. If you don’t want pain, tell it to go. If you want full range of movement back, tell your joints to move correctly. Then test it out. Check for changes. If there is a slight change for the better, give thanks to Jesus. Don’t quit, keep going. It is a fight. Take communion and discern the Lord’s body. Listen to the DHT teaching on how to minister healing.

Removing the doubt will be hard for me. My grandmother and mom both had/have Rheumatoid Arthritis and I have excepted it as fate. I have always been told that this is a genetic disease and that I was born with it. Your website has giving me peace and understanding that I havent felt in my whole lifetime.. I am so ready to renew my mind. Thanks so much..Kim

  • Cornel says:

Listen to those DHT messages, it will help you renew your mind and give you hope. That disease is straight from the pit off hell and Jesus died to set you free from it. Don’t expect it, don’t fear it. Just step on it!

  • Kim says:

I see that these can be downloaded. Can they be downloaded on a audio cd or only mp3? I have 7 children and always in the car and it would be nice to have them for the cd player..Thanks..Kim

  • Cornel says:

They will download as mp3′s but once they are downloaded onto your computer you can write them onto cd’s to listen to anywhere you want. :)

This is such a good article, Cornel! God’s people perish for lack of knowledge, so thank you for bringing us a deeper knowledge of this subject from the Word, IN BALANCE! It’s very freeing! I’m in the process of creating my first blog site, and when I do, I hope you will allow me to post your website as one of my “Recommended Links”; thanks!

Hi Cornel…thanks for the teaching on dealing with curses and how to bless. I’m in sales (large and complex deals) and lately it seems that every deal I work on has faced unusual delays and complications. It’s getting very frustrating and while my faith is continually growing in the area of ministering healing to the sick and reaching out to the homeless, work complications really frustrate me. I would love to hear more from you on how to release blessings over my work and have more peace and joy in this area of my life.

Thanks again for all that you do!

    Phil

  • hfeld?? says:

Hm,okay, but when the curses are still here, and the sicknesses are still here, how do we make sure we are at least forgiven? When the devil takes away our health and curses us, does he make us not forgiven and still sinners, too?

  • Cornel says:

No, the devil can’t take away your forgiveness or salvation.

Rom 8:38-39 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
