If there is one writer who is currently giving me much food for thought then it is hands down Frank Viola. I have just finished another of his books, the most recent being Epic Jesus: The Christ You Never Knew. (For other reviews, click here) Epic is an understatement as Frank once again manages to shed a light on Christ that blows your preconceived perceptions of Him out of the water.
In this very short book (It took me 45 minutes to read next to the pool on Sunday) he takes you on a journey through eternity past, eternity present and eternity future, jumping straight in from the amazing description of Christ found in the epistle of Colossians. From there he gives you glimpses of the most awesome love story ever, the story of Christ and His bride.
It is almost impossible to write a review for such a short, condensed work since by the time you have finished this post you could have been a few pages deep into Frank’s amazing portrait of Christ already. So instead I have decided to just share 5 of my favourite quotes from the book.
“Paul’s primary way of dealing with a church problem is to give God’s people a stunning unveiling of Jesus Christ. For Paul, Jesus Christ is the solution to all problems. And any problem that a believer or a church has can be juiced down to one common denominator: They have lost sight of Jesus Christ?”
“You will never understand Jesus by looking at the God of the Old Testament. You must first look at Jesus and then you will understand the God of the Old Testament. Because Jesus is the human face of God.”
“To separate the church from the kingdom is like separating light from visibility.”
“So when you make a mistake, God isn’t slapping His forehead in heaven saying, ‘Oh no, I never thought she’d do that. I never thought he’d do that!’ No, the Lord isn’t playing it by ear. He’s not improvising and making it up as He goes.”
“But Christ is ALL. Everything else is commentary.”
If reading is not your favourite thing, repent. Just joking. But really, if you aren’t a big reader, you can actually download the message this book was transcribed from and listen to it. Click here for the link.
